Titled "How to Prevent & Treat Colds & Flu,"1 it highlighted the significant roles of Zinc and NAC (N-acetylcysteine) in bolstering our immune defences. Inspired by this enlightening discussion, we're here to explore how these two supplements can be pivotal in enhancing your immunity, especially against the common cold and flu. 

Zinc: A Cornerstone for Immune Defence 

Zinc isn't just a mineral; it's a critical component of our immune defence system. It plays a pivotal role in cell growth, differentiation, and metabolism, significantly impacting our body's ability to ward off infections. 

Antiviral Properties: Zinc has been shown to inhibit the replication of cold viruses. This is particularly effective when used in zinc lozenges, allowing direct contact with pathogens in the throat. A comprehensive meta-analysis by Hemilä highlights the effectiveness of high-dose zinc (75 mg/day) in reducing cold duration.2

Mucolytic and Antioxidant: Known for its ability to break down mucus, NAC is also a precursor to glutathione, a potent antioxidant, which plays a crucial role in reducing oxidative stress and boosting immune defences. 

Clinical Evidence: A landmark study published in the European Respiratory Journal showed that NAC (600 mg twice daily) significantly reduced the severity and frequency of influenza-like episodes. This double-blind trial involving 262 subjects underscored NAC's role in reducing flu symptoms, even in virus-infected individuals.3 

Supplementation Dosage and Guidelines 

Zinc: For optimal benefits in cold prevention, a dosage of approximately 75 mg/day of zinc acetate or gluconate, commenced within 24 hours of symptom onset, is advised. 

NAC: A standard daily dose is about 1,200 mg (600 mg twice a day). During acute respiratory symptoms, some health practitioners may recommend increasing the dose to 2,000-3,000 mg daily for a short period.
