Hydrochloric acid (HCl) and the proteolytic enzyme pepsin that are secreted in the stomach, and the pancreatic enzymes (amylase, lipase, and protease) secreted from the pancreas into the small intestine are essential for digestion and absorption of nutrients from the food we eat.
