Diet, exercise, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, not getting too stressed. They’re all things we know we need to be doing to keep ourselves healthy. But as we rush through each week, it’s all too common to let things slip. Suddenly, its November. And whilst we might be giving up the razor for a month, now is the right time to stop and think about why we do Movember and what our specific health needs are as we get older.
The point of Movember is that it raises awareness (and money) around male health problems, including prostate and testicular cancer, and men’s mental health.
Aging and the Risk of Prostate Cancer
According to the Movember charity, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed male cancer in the UK. If detected early, you have a 98% chance of survival beyond five years. If its detected late, your chances slip to 26%.
So getting used to talking about prostate cancer, and having regular checks is vital. You should be having a regular test (organised by your GP) to check for the presence of prostate cancer markers in your blood from the age of 50. These checks should start at 45 if you’re Afro Caribbean or you have a family history of prostate cancer.
Protecting Your Prostate Through Diet
No matter how old you are, you can take steps to keep yourself healthy, including the health of your prostate. Just as is the case for whole-body wellbeing, maintaining a healthy weight helps reduce the risk of male cancers.
But as well as eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, veggies and good fats (from foods such as avocado, olive oil and salmon) and avoiding too much red meat, there are certain foods that can help keep the prostate healthy.
Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that gives them their red colour. Numerous studies have linked lycopene with prostate health. Lycopene can help slow down the growth of both an enlarged prostate and the growth of prostate cancer. Lycopene supplements contain concentrated levels of this amazing plant nutrient.
Pomegranate can also help protect the prostate and slow down the progression of prostate cancer. Green tea extract can help improve prostate function and help prevent problems passing urine as you age.
Our Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules contain plant compounds that can help support the health of the prostate. As can our Prostate Support Capsules, which contain a blend of saw palmetto and lycopene.
Looking After Your Immune System
As for everyone, as winter draws in, looking after our immune system can help it defend us against winter bugs. Foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, broccoli and sweet potatoes can all help.
Sometimes, we need additional support and a high dose vitamin C supplement can really help boost reserves!
If you’re a younger man, then you may have fertility on your mind. Whilst reproductive health is a complex issue, staying as healthy as possible will help keep your fertility tip top. If you’re considering a family, try a male fertility supplement to give you the best chance of high quality sperm.
Wishing you happy, and healthy, Movember, however groomed your facial hair!
